Car Key Replacement by Vehicle Brand — What the Process Actually Involves
Not all replacement keys are created equal, and the process varies significantly by manufacturer. For General Motors vehicles — Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac — most models from the early 2000s onward require transponder programming through the OBD-II port using brand-specific software. Ford and Lincoln keys, including the increasingly common push-button proximity fobs used on F-150s and Explorers, require both a mechanical blade cut and a two-stage PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) programming sequence. Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles use a similar chip-and-cut approach, though Ram trucks from 2013 onward added a more sophisticated immobilizer that requires additional flash programming steps our technicians are trained and equipped to handle.
Import brands each carry their own requirements. Toyota and Lexus smart keys use a proximity chip that must be synced to the vehicle's ECU, and losing all keys on a Camry or RAV4 typically requires a full system re-initialization — something our mobile unit can perform without a dealership visit. Honda and Acura proximity keys from 2018 onward use a dual-chip architecture.
